💄 Selena Gomez and Rihanna Stir the Beauty Industry Pot

Despite what your friend’s boyfriend who wears the same three outfits thinks, the beauty industry is more than just pricy cosmetics and glitzy marketing.

Led by an all-star studded celebrity cast, today’s beauty industry trends challenge the status quo and traditional beauty standards.

Celebrity beauty brands surpassed $1 billion in sales in 2023 (source: NielsenIQ), growing even faster than the total beauty category.

Some of the heaviest hitters were Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty and Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, which are excellent examples of beauty as a vehicle for change.

Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez advocates for mental health, directly addressing the mental health implications of societal beauty standards. By promoting self-acceptance and mental health awareness, her brand challenges the industry's narrow definitions of beauty.

Rare Beauty's commitment to supporting mental health initiatives through its sales further integrates social responsibility into its business model, pushing the conversation beyond skin-deep beauty.

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna sets a new standard of inclusivity by offering an unprecedented range of foundation shades (40 at launch, which has since expanded) that cater to an incredibly diverse customer base.

Fenty Beauty addressed a significant gap in the market (how did it take this long to get it right??), forcing other brands to follow suit.

Like it or love it, celeb beauty brands are stirring the pot by making self-acceptance and inclusivity a non-negotiable standard in beauty, showing that a successful brand must cater to all if it wants to compete.

Even the fellas are getting into skincare– Brad Pitt with Le Domaine Skincare and Harry Styles with Pleasing.

🏩 Each icon marries their personal brand with their unique perspective on what beauty means in a lucrative market.

The New York Times published an article in 2021 begging, "Dear Celebrities: Please Stop Churning out Beauty Brands," but we love it.

Do you see celebrity beauty brands sticking around?

💉 Botox Business is Boomin’

Ever thought of Botox as an economic indicator?

Well, it turns out America’s fave wrinkle smoother is telling us more about the economy's health than a bunch of economists huddled over charts.

AbbVie, the huuuge pharma company that owns the company that owns the BOTOX® trademark (confusing, we know), had a bit of a rollercoaster last year, expecting folks to tighten their belts and skip the Botox trips.

But, surprise, surprise, the Botox party didn't stop.

It wasn't a record-breaking bash, but sales didn't dip either–  $1.7 billion in the bag for 2023. Seems like even amid economic uncertainty, the quest for eternal youth and that flawless selfie isn’t going anywhere.

And here's a juicy bit: there's a new player, Daxxify, promising to keep foreheads smooth for up to nine months.

But for now, Botox is still the queen of the aesthetic castle, with sales expected to bloom to $2.9 billion this year.

You're probably thinking, "Cool story, but what’s it gotta do with me?”

A lot, actually.

These sorts of trends in aesthetic medicine can open up new career paths or side hustles. Imagine specializing in cosmetic nursing or even becoming a certified injector down the line. The demand is clearly there, and it's growing.

You can even build on your unique perspective in the healthcare industry as a nurse by understanding how healthcare and aesthetic companies make these fortunes.

While the BOTOX product is showing more resilience than the forehead skin of its wrinkle-less customers, new competitors like Daxxify are coming on the scene– and disruption tends to be followed by opportunity.

Whether you're pro- or anti-BOTOX, curious, or just love following beauty trends, knowing what's hot (and what's not) makes you very well-informed for when a girlfriend inevitably asks your opinion.

Now, we’re not saying BOTOX sales are a magic crystal ball for the economy and future, but it’s an interesting insight into human behavior, to say the least.

If anything, next time someone mentions the economy, throwing in a "Did you know some people are looking at Botox sales as an economic indicator?" is one way to stir up some instant intrigue.

This Week’s Nurse Report is Brought to You by PRO Compression

Wait, why do I need compression socks?

Being on your feet and walking miles a day during those 12+ hour shifts takes a toll on your

body. Your heart has to work extra hard to pump blood all day, and every nurse knows that sore feet and fatigued legs feel that last long after your shift.

PRO Compression socks were designed with nurses in mind and are trusted by nurses

Worldwide.

The comfortable, graduated compression helps boost blood circulation, alleviate the soreness you experience, and stave off fatigue during those long shifts.

Nurse Wallet readers can try PRO Compression socks for the first time with this exclusive offer: 3 Pairs of knee-high compression socks for $60 (save $30!) with code NURSE60.

🌙 Thriving on Night Shift: A Nurse's Guide to Surviving 'The Dark Side'

🦉 This one is for you, night owl fam.

(Aspiring night owls welcome too– the night shift has some pretty cool perks!)

Starting the night shift can make you and your circadian rhythms feel slightly lost.

Worry not! Here's a quick guide to help you gracefully navigate those eerie, quiet hours.

 🌃 Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: It's all about getting your Zzz's right.

Aim to adjust your sleep schedule before starting your stretch. Warm up by going to bed later than usual. If needed at first, try using melatonin if you wake up too early– but you’ll eventually want to try to get full, deep sleep au natural.

😴 No matter how prepared you think you are, the first day is about powering through. Grab an afternoon nap if possible, but avoid making yourself more tired.

Remember, it's all about syncing your body with your new night rhythm. Just any typical shut-eye time doesn’t count as quality sleep.

Blackout shades, eye masks, and noise machines are your new best friends.

😴Tip: DND that phone because the world doesn’t know you're in dreamland during the day.

Post-Shift Sleep Routine: After your shift, take a nice warm shower first, then hit the hay.

🚗 Surviving the drive home with droopy eyes and an overstimulated brain can be challenging. Windows down, music up, and sing along like no one’s listening! Ice, Jolly Ranchers or hard candy, especially sour ones, can be lifesavers, too.

And don't forget, calling a friend is a great way to stay awake and in touch with your people!

💪Staying Awake on the Job: Hydration is key– drinking water keeps you alert.

💃Tip: Move around, climb stairs, and get that blood flowing!

Movement is the medicine, but a late-night coffee order never hurts either! Just be sure it doesn't prevent you from falling asleep when you get home.

🍳 Meal Mastery: Breakfast at dinner time? Why not! You’re in the unique club where you can eat any category meal at any time of day without judgment.

🥕 Tip: Eat your main meal when you wake up in the evening and a light one in the early morning.  Avoid big carby meals that will make you crash right before you start your shift.

❤️ Patience with Loved Ones: Your friends and family might not get the night shift life immediately, so don’t get irritated if they reach out during your beauty sleep.

Keep that phone off as tempting as it is to respond with half-opened eyes. Remind yourself they're reaching out because they care.

😎Tip: Have fun with it! We like setting fun auto-respond texts on DND, such as “Hey! 💞Currently snoring after working night shift, I’ll get back to you later today!”
